چکیده

The effects of sarcoidosis upon lung function have already been studied by a number of investigators. Usually, however, sarcoidosis has been included only as one of a group of diseases producing pulmonary fibrosis, and sarcoidosis itself has not been specifically investigated. The purpose of this investigation was to study pulmon.ary function in sarcoidosis at all stages and to determine the nature of any disturbance and changes associated with progression of the disease. The abnormalities of function associated with particular radiographic appearances were also investigated, and we tried to assess the value of the various tests of function in gauging disability, progress, and prognosis.

Use of pulmonary function tests in the management of sarcoidosis.

The literature on pulmonary function testing in sarcoidosis is critically reviewed. The results indicate that pulmonary function tests are not a reliable means for detecting the presence of parenchymal sarcoidosis, nor do they provide an accurate estimate of the extent of parenchymal disease. There are at present no known pulmonary function criteria that allow the clinician to predict the natur...

HRCT findings of pulmonary sarcoidosis; relation to pulmonary function tests

UNLABELLED BACKGROUND Chest-X-ray has several limitations in detecting the extent of pulmonary disease in sarcoidosis. It might not reflect the degree of pulmonary involvement in patients with sarcoidosis when compared to computed tomography of the thorax. We aimed to investigate the HRCT findings of pulmonary sarcoidosis and to find out the existence of possible relations between HRCT findi...

Rate of improvement of pulmonary function in sarcoidosis during treatment with corticosteroids.

Serial measurements of vital capacity were obtained in 11 patients with impaired pulmonary function due to sarcoidosis during 12 courses of corticosteroid treatment. Vital capacity improved promptly and approached a maximum value in about three weeks. A three week trial is probably sufficient to show whether or not corticosteroids are effective in a patient with sarcoidosis.
